Looking Back  |  Looking Forward

Language Arts

We have been working on an Analysis of Short Stories unit.  We have completed an analysis on 2 short stories- Thank you, Ma'am and All Summer in a Day. Studies have been analyzing literal meanings of text and inferential meanings of text. We have also wrapped our unit on Figurative Language. Students worked through various activities involving Figurative Language. We will now use this knowledge of Figurative Language and include it into story writing. Students also began planning a narrative story last week (picture prompt included below). Next week, students will work on their beginnings- focusing on establishing a catchy lead, introducing characters and setting and focusing closely on using expressive writing.

Math

For the past couple of weeks, we have been focusing on Probability and Data Management: Graphing. We looked at various types of graphs- bar graphs, broke line graphs and continuous line graphs. Students worked through reading information on graphs and collecting data/producing graphs. Next week. will continue with this work.

Social Studies

In grade 5 social studies, we have began our new unit: Histories and Stories or Ways of Life in Canada. Last week, we focused on Aboriginal Storytelling and the significance that various creatures hold in aboriginal legends and stories. Next week, we will focus on the 6 distinct regions of the First Nations of Canada- Arctic, Northwest, Subarctic, Plateau, Great Plains and Eastern Woodlands. We will study their tribes, land and climate, shelter, food, symbolism and inventions and tools.

In grade 6 social studies, we focused on Municipal Government and looking at the services that local governments provide their citizens. Next week, we will look at how our municipal governments pay for services (taxes) and move into local bylaws.

Music

Studies have now began drumming with Ms. Oppenheim! Students are so excited for this! We will also continue studying Rock and Roll music.

Days of Kindness

For the month of February, Mount View School has been taking part in Acts of Kindness. In our grade 5/6 classrooms, we have created a 'Days of Kindness' initiative. Each day, 2 students are selected for our Days of Kindness initiative, their names are displayed on the whiteboard and all of the students write kind messages for our 2 students. We have really enjoyed taking part in this initiative and building our classroom community. Students have been so wonderful to each other and it is evident they have enjoyed taking part in this exercise!
