Writer's Workshop

This week, students began prepping for the Remembrance Day assembly. Our class, along with Mr. MacDonald's class and Ms. Oppenheim's class will be hosting the Remembrance Day assembly. We focused on what Peace means to us. Students created Peace sentences using sensory writing. Next week, we will continue with our personal narratives.

Math

We continued with our multiplication and division unit. This week, we focused on two multiplication strategies: Algorithm and Lattice. Students now can use whichever strategy they prefer that give them the best results.

Social Studies

In grade 5 social studies, we continued with our mapping project and creating interesting facts about our country. We are all done now and will begin our next unit on Monday: Regions of Canada.

In grade 6 social studies, we continued with our Pillars of Democracy project. We will work on this next week as well.

Halloween

We had so much fun celebrating Halloween. The class worked in teams on an Escape Halloween Challenge where they completed a series of tasks to escape a haunted house! Thanks to the families for their generous contributions to our class potluck!

Also, an amazing job to those families that took part in our school Pumpkin Patch!

Looking Back  |  Looking Forward

Writer's Workshop

This week, we began writing our personal narratives using all of the writing techniques we learned so far though mini writing lessons. We focused closely on creating interesting hooks to grab our reader's attention, incorporating transition words and dialogue and using sensory writing to help the reader with visualization. We will continue with this next week.

Math

In math, we continued with our number sense: multiplication and division unit. Next week, we will continue exploring different multiplication strategies we can use.

Social Studies

In grade 5 social studies, we continued with creating our maps. This week we also worked on creating 'Interesting Facts' about our countries!

In grade 6 social studies, we began our new unit: 4 Pillars of Democracy- Freedom, Representation, Equity and Justice.

Art

In art this week, we created Aurora Borealis using chalk pastels. Next steps, we will create Haiku poems based off of this art.

Writer's Workshop: Personal Narratives

We had an opportunity to continue work with Ozobots. This week, we programmed our Ozobot to trace the initials of our name!

In reading buddies this week, we began creating sensory writing sentences for a spooky setting!


Grade 6 Social Studies- We discussed the difference between Equality and Equity.

Quick Reminders:

-Halloween Celebration- Thursday October 31st. Feel free to participate in our MVS Pumpkin Patch. Your child can also wear a costume to school that day, if they choose to. Please ensure it is weapon free, no masks or blood.
-We will also have a grade 5/6 Halloween Party/Potluck on Thursday! If you would like, you can send a healthy snack to school with your child.
-No School (Non-Instructional Day)- Friday November 1st
-Patrollers next week- Team 4 (AM), Team 3 (PM)

Looking Back  |  Looking Forward


Writer's Workshop

-We've now completed our 'visualizing colour' assignment using sensory writing. Next week, we will begin writing our personal narratives using all the writing techniques we've learned so far.

Math

-We've wrapped our unit on Number Sense-Addition and Subtraction. Next week we will have a unit test and begin our next unit, Multiplication and Division.

Social Studies

-In grade 5, we continued working on our maps. Students have been showcasing an excellent understanding of all of the components of maps and using their creative skills to construct their very own maps!

-In grade 6, we finally made our big decision and cast our votes for Student Vote. I will share the results in next weeks blog!

Novel Study

-We continued to read our novel, Ninth ward and made connections to the text.

Looking Back:


-In writer's workshop we have been working on visualizing and sensory writing.  Students completed a 'visualizing colour' writing task.

-In math we continued with our number sense unit- focusing on addition and subtraction.

 -In grade 5 social studies, we continued with our mapping unit. Students have been working hard to create a map for a country of their own.

-In grade 6 social studies, students continued with activities surrounding our federal election.

-This week, students also had an opportunity to do some exploration and hands on learning with Ozobots, which we will be utilizing for coding this year.

In grade 6 social studies, we watched and analyzed the debate that took place between all prospective candidates this week.



Working with Ozobots.  We were given a challenge to code the Ozobot to trace our names.  We had so much fun using these robots!











Grade 5 social studies- students are creating a map. They are incorporating all of the components of a map. (Title, legend, compass, cities, capital city, 10 different landforms)




Monday Math Problem Solving Task





 Visualizing Colour Poems-Students created a poem for a colour and used all of the senses to describe that colour along with the opposites of those descriptions. 




We completed a 'Thankful For' activity with our reading buddies!



Looking Forward:

-In writer's workshop, now that we've spent a few weeks looking at various writing techniques that writer's use to enhance writing, such as: sensory writing, 'show, don't tell', dialogue, transition words, interesting hooks, among others- we will use these techniques to create personal narratives.

-In math, we will continue with our number sense unit.

-In grade 5 social studies, we will continue with our mapping project.

-The grade 6 students will take part in a nation wide Student Vote this week. Students will have an opportunity to cast a vote for one of the prospective candidates in our federal election. For the last few weeks, we have been studying the candidates closely and becoming well-informed to make our big decision!
