Welcome Back!

Welcome to Our Grade 5/6 Class Blog!

I'm excited to be working with all the students this year as well as getting to know all of our families.  It was wonderful to see familiar faces as well as meet new families at the Muffin Mixer.

During the past couple of weeks, we've been getting familiar with classroom routines and expectations and building a strong community within the classroom.

The Grade 5/6s also received their patrol training and began patrolling last week!

Here are a few pictures from the last couple of weeks at school:

                                                 I Am Art!

We created cover pages for our visual journals of all of our favourites things!

                                                                      Tin Foil Art!

This year we will have reading buddies every Friday with Ms. Oppenheim's class.  This week we got to know our buddies by interviewing them and asking a series of questions!

In writer's workshop, we have been focusing on Imagery and helping the reader visualize our writing.  This week, we looked at the technique of 'Showing and Not Telling'.

We began our first novel study for the year- Ninth Ward!

After reading a chapter, we complete various activities to show our understanding of the text.

Looking Forward:

-In writer's workshop, we will continue working on personal narratives.
-In math, we will continue with our Patterns and Algebra unit.
-In grade 5 social studies, we have been looking at Canadian landforms, we will continue with this.
-In grade 6 social studies, we have started preparing for the upcoming federal election. We will spend the next few weeks studying all of the candidates that are running. The grade 6 students will also participate in Student Vote which will be held in October. This past week, we engaged in conversations around decision making and rights and responsibilities.
-We will continue with our novel study: Ninth Ward.
