Looking Back  |  Looking Forward

Language Arts

For the past couple of weeks we have been focusing on Figurative Language in our grade 5/6 classrooms, in particular this week we focused on Idioms. Students have been examining various idioms, looking at the meanings and how they are used in various forms of texts. Students had an opportunity to complete another set of Flip Grid videos to share their understandings of Idioms. Next week, we will focus on personification and examine various forms of text, such as poetry to deepen our understanding of personification.

Math

In math, we have been focusing on Geometry: Angles and Polygons. Students learned how to measure angles, construct angles, measuring sum of the angles in triangles and quadrilaterals, classifying triangles, quadrilaterals, and other polygons based on properties related to sides and angles. Next week, we will wrap the unit with a test and begin our next unit: Probability and Data Management.

Social Studies

In grade 5 social studies, students are continuing to work on their Regions of Canada projects. We are hoping to have these completed in the next couple of weeks and present them.

In grade 6 social studies, students have been working on a series of webquests, focusing on Canada's System of Government, the Sovereign and Governor General, the Judiciary, the Senate and House of Commons. We will continue this work next week and move into our next unit: Local Government and City Bylaws.

Below are pictures from the last couple of weeks at school:

We have been working on expanding our vocabulary through various 'vocabulary building' games. We had so much fun playing this one, which was similar to the game Taboo!

Ozobots: In teams, students designed a race track that measured to 100 centimetres and then competed in a race to see which Ozobot traveled the fastest!

Monday Math Problem-Solving: Students worked through an angles math challenge!

Students chose an idiom and illustrated both the literal and figurative meaning of it!
