Looking Back  |  Looking Forward

Language Arts

For the last couple of weeks, the grade 5/6 classrooms have been analyzing various forms of text, including images and media and learning how to respond to text through deep level thinking. We also focused on 5 areas in particular when analyzing texts- Mood, Theme, Setting, Point of View and Character Traits.

Students had many opportunities for oral discussions in small group settings and together came up with ideas to respond to questions that required deep thinking. In the end, students shared their responses through Flip Grid (Flip Grid is a social learning platform that allows educators to ask a question, then the students respond in a video).

Next week, we will focus on Figurative Language and analyze the written version of the short story: Thank You Ma'am.

We used these two images to complete our analysis of images. The first one being a black and white photo from the 1950s on a street in New York. The second, is an image of a bird seller in Afghanistan.

Math

This week, we began our new unit: Geometry: Angles and Polygons. We focused on sides and vertices of 2-D shapes, measuring angles and identifying various types of angles- right angle, acute, obtuse and straight angle. Next week, we will focus on reflex angles, classifying polygons, estimating angles and constructing angles.

Social Studies

In grade 5 social studies, students have been busy completing their Regions of Canada project work. The projects are coming together very well. Students will continue to work on these for the next couple of weeks to wrap our unit on Physical Geography of Canada.

In grade 6 social studies, we have been focusing on 3 Levels of Government and Canada's Parliamentary System. We will continue with this work next week.

Below are a few more pictures of the last couple of weeks at school:

Ozobots: This week, students worked in small groups and completed a challenge by creating a race track that measured exactly 100 centimetres and included at least 3 different speed codes. Next week, we will continue with this work and each group will compete in a race to see which Ozobot travels the fastest from the starting point to the finish line!
