Looking Back  |  Looking Forward

Language Arts

We have wrapped our short story unit and students are now working on a final task of creating a brochure for All Summer in a Day to showcase their understanding of the story. Students have been making connections to the text, explaining the literal and inferential meanings of the text as well as analyzing the figurative language and vocabulary used throughout the story. We also had a chance to watch the short film for this story and compare and contrast the film to the text.


Writer's Workshop

In Writer's Workshop, students have been working hard on their narrative stories. We have been working through our beginning, middle and extended endings and adding all of the writing techniques we have focused on this year. Students have also been giving and receiving peer feedback. We have been putting a lot of importance on revisions and rereading our writing. Next week, as students finish their stories, they will be using Book Creator to generate their good copies. Stay tuned for the final product during student-led conferences!

Math 

In math, we have wrapped our unit on data management: graphing. Students learned about various graphs, including: bar graphs, broken line graphs and continuous line graphs. We also focused on finding the mean, median and mode for data sets. Next, we will begin our fractions and decimals unit.

Social Studies

In grade 5 social studies, as part of our Histories and Stories of ways of life in Canada unit, we have been learning about the 6 First Nations groups in Canada. Next week, we will focusing on Canadian Explorers: Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain.

In grade 6 social studies, students have been working on a bylaws project. They have picked a bylaw that they would like to see passed in the city of Calgary that is currently not a bylaw in Calgary. Students have been asked to identify and explain the problem their bylaw would solve, why they think it's important for their bylaw to be enforced, a reasonable penalty for disobeying the bylaw, how their bylaw would benefit the community, which stakeholders will be affected and what are the positive and negative effects of enforcing the bylaw.

Ozobots

We are learning to block code. We played a gamed called Shape Tracer. It can be found on games.ozoblocky.com
