Looking Back  |  Looking Forward

Writer's Workshop

This week, students continued working on their personal narratives. We focused on how to create strong endings for our stories, using the technique of ending a story with image, action or feeling. Next week, we will take our stories and convert them into an ebook, as well as use Google Keep or Chrome Canvas to create illustrations for our ebooks. We're very excited to see what the final product will look like!

Math

This week, we continued with our division unit. We began with simple division problems and also moved into long division. We learned the importance of using multiplication to help us divide. We have also been using the abbreviation below to help us remember the steps for long division. Next week, we will continue working on long division.

Social Studies

In grade 5 social studies, we continued with our study on the six regions of Canada. This week, we focused on the Arctic region and the Interior Plains region. We learned about permafrost and the challenges that Inuit or Dene people may encounter in adapting to the harsh climate in this region. For the Interior Plains, we learned about some of the industries located in this region such as: agriculture and mining. Next week, we will focus on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Lowlands and the Cordillera region.

In grade 6 social studies, students continued to work on the four pillars of democracy. Next week, we will wrap this unit and focus on the Charter of Rights and Freedom.

Physical Education

In Phys. Ed this week, we enjoyed playing handball in the sun!

Novel Study

We have now finished our novel: Ninth Ward. Wow what a powerful ending! We were all quite sad with some of the struggles that Lanesha (main character) had to face, during Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. We were also inspired by her courage and resiliency throughout the novel and especially at the end. We had many wonderful discussions throughout our readings and opportunities to reflect. Next week, we will begin our final projects.
