Looking Back  |  Looking Forward

Wow, what a busy couple of weeks it's been at MVS! Our winter concert was a huge success and we were so happy to see so many families in attendance. The students worked so hard on their musical piece and we hope you enjoyed it!

Novel Study

Students have now completed their novel study final projects! They worked very hard to complete these projects over the last few weeks and what an incredible job they did showcasing all of their learning in their own creative ways. Feel free to check your child's project on Google Drive! In the new year, we will begin our next unit: Short Stories.

Math

Over the last couple of weeks we have been learning about measurement. We focused on units of measurement: millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres; unit conversions; and perimeter. In the new year, we will review all of these concepts and conclude with a measurement quiz. Our next unit in math will be: Geometry-Angles and Polygons.

Social Studies

In grade 5 social studies, students have been working on project work for the Regions of Canada. They have been focusing on various information for each regions, such as: landforms, climate, cities, bodies of water, wildlife, vegetation, natural resources, tourist locations and provincial and national parks. We will continue with this work in the new year.

In grade 6 social studies, we have been focusing on the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom. Students are completing an assignment where their job is to defend the charter. As their assignment, they have been told that the Canadian government is rewriting the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. As a member of one of the following organizations, Association canadienne-francaise de l’Alberta (ACFA), Metis Nation of Alberta Association (MNAA), First Nations Authorities (FNA)) their association is lobbying to have their group’s collective rights protected within the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. We will continue with this work in the new year.

Design Learning

This week, the grade 5/6 students took part in a design learning task. Ask your child all about this design task and the reflection piece they completed using Flip Grid!
